Light Investigation: Design and Make a Light Maze

(0)
*Updated with new graphics I have used this project with different classes and in different ways. With more able cohorts, the pitch can be adjusted with different parameters on the designs (eg: no adhesives, instead researching different ways to attach boards with latches and folds vs. using tape and glue guns; setting rules for the height of the walls of the maze to use measurement in a meaningful way; only allowing a certain length of board that needs to be cut, etc). Our Year groups used this as an alternative to making periscopes, as it reinforces the same Science objectives about light and the way it travels. In my experience, the children have enjoyed this project more because they’re more in control of the design. Make Working Scientifically more fun with MakeyMakey! This resource has been designed to use as a way to teach the Working Scientifically objectives apart from the core science objectives. In the past, I have used the lessons with the class as a way to reinforce the concept of a fair test, as well as different types of variables. The pack has been broken up into objectives for Years 3 and 4. Using the MakeyMakey gives the children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with engineering, design and core science. Children can also create products with the littleBits to present their findings from enquiries and conclusions as a way to show their understanding. --------------- You might also like: Working Scientifically I can Statements for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with Crayons for Years 3 & 4 - STEAM Unit Working Scientifically with Energy Bites for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with Cookies for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with littleBits for Years 3 and 4

**Updated with new graphics In this resource, children will study the shape of honeycomb before designing, making and evaluating a honeycomb relief print. They will then research the anatomy of honeybees before designing, making, and evaluating a honey bee stamp to print over their honeycomb relief prints. Design a Video Game Controller with MakeyMakey

(0)
Children will look at how video game controllers have changed over time, including controllers from Nintendo and Playstation. After plotting changes on a timeline, children will consider what makes the designs effective before designing their own to use and evaluate. In the past, I have used this learning outcome alongside an explanation text and video game design on Scratch (both also available in my shop). This 35-page resource has been designed to use alongside** Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo**, but can also be done independently of the novel study. Children will research different flora and fauna of an island in the South Pacific before writing an information text about their chosen flora or fauna. The pack includes different graphic organisers, resources for lower ability pupils, as well as lesson plans and rubrics. Lessons and objectives are aligned with objectives from the 2014 National Curriculum of England and has links to the Common Core. Digital copies of the files for editing and sharing on digital platforms are available with download.

Baking gives the children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with design, Maths, and core science. I have included recipes at the start of the pack to do with the class initially and expose them to different macarons. Alternatively, different types can be purchased ahead of time and shared with the class that way. **Updated with new graphics In this resource, children will learn about the importance of honey bees before being introduced to Colony Collapse Disorder. Children will then write a persuasive text using modal verbs and Point, Evidence, Explain either persuading their audience to end Colony Collapse Disorder. In the past, I have introduced this outcome by teaching lessons on three consecutive days in the styles of Authoritarianism, Democracy, and Communism. The children then write their persuasive text in one of these styles. A digital copy of the resource is available to editing and sharing on Google Classroom and Seesaw with download.
